The NDIS — the basics

For people new to the scheme.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funds reasonable and necessary supports for Australians under 65 with permanent and significant disability. This page is a brief orientation for families touching the NDIS in the context of serious or end-of-life illness.

Who can access the NDIS

  • Aged under 65 at the time of application
  • Australian citizen, permanent resident, or holder of a Protected Special Category Visa
  • Has a permanent and significant disability that affects daily life
  • Or — for children under 6 — has developmental delay

People over 65 are usually supported through the aged care system instead.

How to start

Call the NDIS on 1800 800 110, or speak to a Local Area Coordinator in your area. Your GP, hospital social worker, or treating specialist can also help start the conversation.

When the application relates to a serious or terminal illness, ask specifically about access pathways for people with progressive or life-limiting conditions. There are sometimes faster routes.

Free help is available

You don’t have to do this alone. NDIS appeals support, disability advocacy organisations, and (in many areas) free local NDIS advocates can help with applications, plan reviews, and disputes. Ask the NDIA or search “NDIS advocacy [your state]”.
