LGBTQI+ grief and chosen family

When the world doesn't always see your loss.

LGBTQI+ people may face particular challenges in grief: relationships unrecognised by biological family, exclusion from funerals, loss minimised, and grief unsupported by systems built for traditional families.

Your relationship was real

If you have lost a partner, a chosen family member, or a community elder — and the world does not see your loss as "real enough" for sympathy, leave, or recognition — your grief is valid, full, and deserves every support.

In Australia, de facto partners (including same-sex partners) have legal rights over the estate, superannuation, and funeral decisions. These rights exist regardless of whether the biological family acknowledges the relationship.

If you are being excluded from funeral planning or estate decisions by biological family, a community legal centre can advise you on your rights — often at no cost.

LGBTQI+ specific support

QLife (1800 184 527) provides anonymous LGBTQI+ peer support and referral, including for grief and loss. Switchboard Victoria (1800 729 367) and other state-based services also offer targeted support.
